Rainbows and Dead Hummingbirds

God Has a Sense of Humor.

I was having one of those weeks. Nothing dramatic. Just enough to make me start negotiating with the universe on my way to work.

“You’re not going to believe what happened to me today,” I said to Tayler at the end of the day. “God has a sense of humor.”

“What happened?” she asked.

This morning, as I pulled out of my driveway, I looked up and said, Send me a sign - A hummingbird. I need something to get me through the day.

In my head, I was going to a get a fairytale response. A bright little hummingbird flying alongside the car. Hovering at a red light. Looking at me. Flying off. Message delivered.

That did not happen.

I drove to work, forgot I’d even asked, parked in the garage, and headed toward my building. This is not a place where hummingbirds show up - it’s a city and  I’ve never seen a hummingbird there.

And then, next to a trash can, I saw my hummingbird.

Dead.

I stood there for a moment. I love hummingbirds. I don’t love seeing them like that. I looked up at the sun and laughed. Message received. I should be more specific. I am probably in for a rough couple of weeks.”

Tayler laughed and said, “Well, you did get what you asked for. It’s not always rainbows and sunshine.”

And I said, “No. Sometimes it’s just rainbows and dead hummingbirds.”

It’s become our go-to line for the days when nothing lines up — but you know you’re covered.
